Dyeing is an ancient art that predates written records; practiced also during the Bronze Age in Europe. 

Primitive dyeing techniques included a variety of methods such as sticking plants to fabric or rubbing crushed pigments to the cloth. In time, methods used became more & more sophisticated and new techniques were developed, including environmentally conscious ones like based on natural sources such as crushed fruits, berries & other plants. These dyes were boiled into the fabric with the aim of giving light and water resistance.

We always had a great passion for natural dyestuffs & dyeing techniques at Orta. Our trials using various raw materials started 15 years ago.

The biggest obstacle when using natural dyestuff for colouring the fabric was the difficulty of obtaining good colour intensity & a consistency in shading. The vegetal dyestuffs colouring the cotton had a lack of affinity; in other words, the dyestuff had a low tendency to combine with cotton.

After a long period of research and studies; in 2014, Orta developed a new dyeing methodology that overcame these problems. Intensive shades can now be seen in vegetal indigo as well as many other colours. This new technique enables increased affinity of dyestuff to cotton; the dyeing is much more consistent & stable.

We are proud to be the first in the industry using this method at a large scale. Our newly developed process is not only sustainable but also complies with all global standards. 

From all aspects, the new method is a game changer within the industry. It has no limitation for application on natural fibres and potentially any natural dye can be used. Orta has legal protection over the methodology & it is subsidized by EURF * (European Union Research Funds).

Hints for Manufacturing / Laundry

Vegetable dyed fabrics also wore out just like regular denim.

Dry processes – i.e. hand sanding, chevrons, and laser are applicable.

Starch-based chemicals could be used to obtain 3D effects for more fashion looks if requested.

Natural soaps could be used for cleaning & rinsing to continue the environment friendly attitude.

Detergents containing bleaching agents are recommended to maximize colour efficiency.
